Today is April 22nd, so I want you to count to 22.

Repeat after me: Today is Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020. 

What day is today? What day was yesterday? What day is tomorrow?

What month is it?

What kind of weather is it outside today? 

 

Today is the 138th day of school!

- Pick someone to count to 138 with! READY...Count! 

- 138 is a BIG number, so if you would like to start at 50 or a higher number, you can!

- If we were using our straws to count, we would have 100 straws rubber band together in the hundreds column, 3 groups of 10 (30 straws) in the tens column, and eight straws in the ones column. How many more straws (ones) do we need to get to the next group of 10? (140)

EARTH DAY ACTIVITIES:

Today, April 22, is Earth Day! For Earth Day I would like you to click the link below and take a look at my Earth Day powerpoint! There are some questions for you to think about and some activities for you to choose from. I would like you to complete the activity, 4 ways I can help our Earth. I wrote my 4 ways as an example.
*NOTE: This worksheet is part of the PDF that was sent via email. If you don’t have a printer, you can just make 4 boxes on a blank piece of paper and write or draw your 4 reasons in the boxes. 

EARTH DAY POWERPOINT

I would also like you to try and complete one Earth Day project from the powerpoint. I gave a few examples of projects on the slides. I sent the “Home Sweet Home” Earth Day project PDF if that is the project you choose to do. If you choose to complete any other projects, all you need is a paper plate, some paint/ markers/ crayons, and you may use any material you would like for the other parts- yarn, soil, crayons, real grass, etc. Be creative! Send me a picture of your Earth Day Project!

Reading Workshop:

For Earth Day, please choose the TFK titled “Our Planet” Vol 10 #23. Please read through the TFK with your child. On the back there is an activity that asks students to draw what Earth will look like in 30 years. This may be a bit of a difficult concept, so please have your child at least draw a picture of our Earth and something we can do to help keep it clean and beautiful!

- This week we will look at the poem titled "The Rain" (slide 4). - On slide 5, it tells you what to do with the poem each day. For Wednesday, it asks you to read aloud the poem and find the words with a vowel pair! Vowel pairs are words that have 2 vowels next to each other. Example- ai, ee, ou. Highlight or underline the vowel pair words that you see. If you have a notebook, you may keep a section for “Shared Reading Poetry” and we will do a new poem each week (as you can see on the powerpoint). If you do not have a notebook, please complete the assignments on a sheet of paper and keep all of the papers for each poem together.

*Look at the pictures of all of your friends who have completed some of the April challenges so far!

Go on RAZ Kids and read for at least 10-15 minutes. Try to record a story for me so I can hear you read! Take the quiz after each story. Do you see the messages I send you on Raz Kids after I listen to you read?

START A BOOK JOURNAL OF THE BOOKS YOU READ

Have your child read their favorite book (or read it to them) and draw/write about their favorite part. Encouraging children to talk about reading will help build strong literacy skills! You could start a journal where each day your child illustrates their favorite part and maybe writes some key words. Some sentence starters to help get you started could be: My favorite part was … because... One thing that surprised me was… I’d still like to know more about... One thing that made me laugh was... My friend/family member would like this book too because…

Writing Workshop:

“HOW TO” writing is my favorite unit because YOU get to teach people how to do things! Anything!

- Click HERE to see your classmates' HOW TO writing pieces! Maybe they can help you get some new ideas! If you would like your "how to" added to the powerpoint, send it on over to Ms. Corbett and I will be happy to share it.
- Click HERE for a template to write a “how to”. If you have a printer, please print multiple copies for this unit of study. If you do not have a printer, please copy a similar layout onto a plain piece of paper to create your own “how to” writing template. It is a very simple template that can be re-created on a piece of paper if you need!

*When we write, we worry about QUALITY not QUANTITY. Ask yourself… - Will someone want to read my “how to”? - Did I do my best work and take my time? - Did I add nice color to my pictures? - Did I use my best handwriting?

*Don't start a new "how to" until you the ones you already have are your BEST work!

*REMEMBER! Good writers...

- have to first think and plan about their writing!

- don’t start writing until they have ideas ready. 

- use details to keeps readers interested. 

- pretend like readers have NO IDEA how to do the thing you are teaching them.

- include all of the steps to help readers learn and be successful.

- write a “how to” about something they are an expert at!
