Blazer Fresh: Don't Read Like A Robot

You should have finished your comprehension questions for the story you worked on last week.  If you have, please count how many words are in your retelling and record that number on the bottom right hand corner of the page. (If you did not finish your comprehension work, do this today!)

Read your story to warm up.  Are you ready to be timed? If not, practice reading again until you feel prepared for a smooth reading.

Ask someone at home to listen to you read.  Have them grab some scrap paper and a timer.  As you read, they should tally any mistakes you make for one minute.  When one minute is up, have them mark where you finished reading.  Count how many words you read in one minute.  Subtract the number of errors made and you will have the number of words you read correctly in one minute.  This should be recorded at the bottom of the page. Email me to let me know how many words you read correctly per minute and I will assign your next learning task!

Your audio files for your story are posted in our Fluency Friends Google Classroom.

You are in Group B if the first letter of your name is D,M, or S.

LLI Group A:

Warm up with a reread of Goldie and the Three Bears.

Today you will be reading a new story.  Find Helping Mom in your book bag.

Turn to page 3.  When mom got the flowers, she said, “You can help me” to the little girl.  Clap flowers. Say flowers.  The letters f and l come first in flowers. Run your finger under it and read flowers.

Turn to page 7 to see how the girl helped her mom.  They have two shovels; what will they do with them?

Turn to pages 14 and 15.  The mom shows the girl how to use the hose so she can water the flowers.

What else do you think the girl waters?  Turn to page 16 to find out.

Turn back to the beginning of the story and read about how the girl helps mom.

When you finish reading, name one strategy you use to help you tackle a tricky word.

LLI Group B:

Warm up with a reread of The Goat in the Garden.

Today you will be reading a new story.  Find A Surprise for Mom in your book bag.

In this book, a boy tells the story of how he and Dad made a surprise for Mom.

Turn to page 2. What are the boy and his dad doing?  And what are they getting?

Turn to page 6 to see what they got at the market.

Now turn to page 9.  What do you think the boy and his dad are going to make for mom?

Turn to pages 14 and 15.  The boy says he put peppers in the big pot.  Then what did Dad put in? Say then. Then starts with two letters t and h to make a sound just like the beginning of the, which also starts with th.

Soon the soup was hot. Find soon. Run your finger under it and read it.

Turn back to the beginning and read to find out if mom liked the surprise. When you finish reading, name one strategy you use to help you tackle a tricky word.
