Activity 1    

“Enemy Pie” By: Derek Munson

Questions to think about: 1. Why does the main character dislike Jeremy Ross? 
2. How did the main character change as he spent his day with his neighbor, Jeremy?
3. What message or lesson can we learn from this book? 
4. Did you ever have a similar problem as the main character?

Activity: Make a friendship pie! Draw a big circle on a piece of paper and divide it into sections. Write one way you can be a good friend in each section.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others by putting yourself in their shoes. Look at the scenarios below and try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes! 

1. You are on the playground and you see someone get pushed down on the ground. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help?
2. You see that a friend got a bad grade on a test and they seem really sad about it. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help?
3. At recess time, there is someone sitting out with no one to play with. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help?
4. A classmate forgot their pencil case at home and they don’t have anything to write with. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? What could you do to help?

Questions to think about while reading:

1. How did the illustrator make Brian look different than the other characters? Why?
2. Was JT trying to hurt Brian’s feelings? Did they get hurt anyways?
3. How do you think Brian feels being left out?
4. Why do you think he draws superheroes with the power to make friends wherever they go?
5. What did Brian do for Justin? How did this make him feel?
6. What’s different about Brian in these pictures? Why does he have color now?


Activity:
Think about how being invisible feels. What can you do/say if they see someone who is lonely? Draw a picture of what that would look like.

Being human means we can feel all sorts of different feelings. Identify one feeling that the boy in the story had and explain when you have felt that same way.

1. Did Howard know how to get along with his friends?
2. What did he learn from his Grandma?
3. What are the 4 rules to get along with others?
4. Help Howard figure out how to help others get along at the end of the video!

Activity: Write/Draw about a time you used one of the 4 rules for getting along:
1. Everyone needs to have a say
2. Everyone needs to have a turn
3. Everyone gets to be right
4. Apologize

Activity 6

“Giraffes Can’t Dance” By: Giles Andreae Questions to think about before reading: 

  1. Have you been to the zoo?
  2. What animals do you see on the cover? Have you seen these in real life?
  3. Can animals dance? Can giraffes jump in the air and twirl?

Questions to think about during/after reading: 

  1. Were the animals being nice when they laughed at Gerald?
  2. How would you feel if you were Gerald?
  3. How does Gerald feel at the end of the story compared to in the middle when the animals were laughing at him?
